Separate the character's voice from product experience
A fictional character cannot literally wear a jacket, taste a drink or experience battery life. The operator can test a product and publish the result through the character, but the wording should make that construction legible. Use the studio tested, our operator observed, or the manufacturer documents instead of giving the character a fabricated body or purchase history.
Create a recommendation rule: no link appears until the team records the basis, relevant relationship, claim owner and review date. A product roundup assembled from merchant copy alone is a catalogue, not a tested guide.

Disclosure and truthfulness are different checks
FTC staff guidance says an endorsement must be honest and cannot communicate a claim the marketer could not legally make. Its affiliate examples recommend a clear explanation of commission near the recommendation and warn that affiliate link by itself may not tell readers what the relationship means.
Amazon's current U.S. Associates agreement requires a clear identification of associate status, incorporates additional program policies and says Amazon does not promise any amount of traffic or commission income. Complying with one program's required sentence does not replace the FTC analysis or rules on another platform.

Practical application
Use a seven-field evidence log
For each recommendation, record product and exact version; source or purchase status; who examined it; dates and duration; procedure; observed result; and claims not tested. Attach the disclosure wording and affiliate program. For software, note plan, operating system and region. For physical goods, note sample condition and whether it was returned or retained.
Example: the studio purchased a microphone at retail, used it for four scripted sessions in a treated room, and compared setup time and edit noise with the team's existing microphone. The guide may report those observations. It should not claim best audio, universal durability or suitability for untreated rooms without evidence.
Editorial analysis
Score usefulness before commission
Choose products because they solve a defined audience task. Score evidence quality, audience fit, material drawbacks, price volatility and availability. Keep the current commission rate out of the editorial score. If two items are equally useful, explain the tie rather than automatically placing the richer link first.
Include a non-purchase option where one exists: keep the current tool, borrow equipment, use an open-source alternative or wait for a need. That recommendation may earn nothing, but it helps establish that the character is not a vending surface.
Practical application
Expire recommendations deliberately
Set a review date based on volatility. Recheck fast-changing subscriptions and software more often than a simple stand. On review, verify the destination, product identity, price language, availability, material drawbacks, disclosure and whether the operator still has a reasonable basis for the claims.
If evidence is stale, remove best language, add a dated note or unpublish the link. Preserve the old log so a correction can explain what changed. Measure refunds, corrections and reader complaints alongside clicks. Affiliate integrity is an operating process, not a disclosure paragraph pasted onto an otherwise unexamined recommendation.
