The persona
Lil Miquela is a computer-generated character created and operated by the Los Angeles studio Brud, active on Instagram since 2016 and, by 2019, an established paid endorser with her own YouTube channel. Her posts are written and produced by Brud, though they read in the first person as her own reactions and updates. By the summer of 2019 she had built a following large enough that Samsung Mobile treated her as a peer to human celebrities in a roster campaign built around its Galaxy phone line.
What the documents establish
A video titled '#TeamGalaxy | Miquela', posted to Miquela's own YouTube channel on 16 July 2019, is captioned: 'Here's a fun thing I did with my #TeamGalaxy friends Millie Bobby Brown, Ninja, and Steve Aoki for Samsung,' tagged '#ad.' Samsung's own regional channel corroborates the arrangement from the brand side: a video titled 'Meet #TeamGalaxy: Lil Miquela', posted by Samsung Philippines on 28 July 2019, describes her as 'Miquela Sousa a.k.a. "Lil Miquela" from #TeamGalaxy' and 'the coolest robot on Instagram,' explicitly naming her as a CGI figure rather than presenting her as human. Both documents place her alongside named human ambassadors -- Millie Bobby Brown, the professional gamer Ninja, and the musician Steve Aoki -- in the same roster.
Character versus company
Miquela's own video frames the partnership as something she personally 'did' with her 'friends,' first-person language that belongs to Brud's scripting of her account, not to an independent decision by the character. The '#ad' tag on that same post is the more load-bearing fact: it is Brud's own disclosure that the content was paid, attached to the post regardless of how the caption is voiced. Samsung's side of the campaign, by contrast, does not pretend she is a real person; its Philippines video calls her 'the coolest robot on Instagram' outright, an acknowledgment that a marketing roster can include a fictional, studio-run character next to human ones without disguising which is which.
What to watch
Neither source states how #TeamGalaxy affected device sales or attributes any commercial outcome to Miquela's presence specifically, and no such figure should be read into this pairing. It is also worth tracking whether Samsung's other regional channels, which ran similar 'Meet #TeamGalaxy' videos for other markets, applied the same explicit 'robot' framing consistently, or whether some markets disclosed her non-human status less directly than the Philippines version did. This is an editorial note on an open comparison, not a finding.
- Did every regional Samsung channel disclose Miquela's non-human status as directly as the Philippines video did?
- What does Brud's own '#ad' tag establish about payment, separate from the friendly tone of the caption itself?
- How does a roster campaign like this differ, in disclosure terms, from a solo endorsement deal?
The clearest fact here is definitional, not promotional: Samsung's own material names Miquela as a robot in the same breath as it lists her among #TeamGalaxy's human members, a disclosure practice worth noting on its own terms.
