What happened

BMW Group Italy announced the Milan ‘Make It Real’ installation on February 9, 2024. Its release describes an iX2 spot in which Lil Miquela encounters physical sensations and chooses to remain in the real world. BMW used that premise for a public multisensory installation at House of BMW, open February 9–18, with scent-based stages and a final vehicle display and product video wall.

The film and the installation are separate production records. Jordi Bares’ visual-effects account, displaying an August 2023 date, describes matching an established character’s expressions and proportions under several parties’ approval. That production account supports a continuity problem: a team working with existing character IP cannot freely redesign the face. It does not establish the film’s exact public launch day or provide Milan attendance results.

Editorial analysis

Analysis

Character Ledger analysis: the campaign reverses the usual virtual-influencer promise. Rather than presenting Miquela as proof that the virtual is sufficient, it uses a virtual character to make embodied sensation—rain, scent, movement—the product story. That is a coherent fit for an experiential auto launch, because the character supplies a visible contrast rather than merely a celebrity endorsement.

Practical application

Practical lesson

When using a virtual character in an experiential campaign, give the character a job the physical setting can complete. Map every story beat to a real visitor interaction, then evaluate each layer separately: creative comprehension, visitation and product consideration. Avoid reporting a designed journey as a measured effect.

Evidence limits

Evidence limits

BMW is the detailed first-party source for the Milan installation; Bares supplies a different, contributor-side account of film production. Neither is independent campaign-effectiveness research. No reviewed attendance, conversion or brand-lift result establishes whether the installation achieved its commercial aims.
