Source record

What happened

CodeMiko was presented in ACM SIGGRAPH Asia 2021’s Real-Time Live program, held December 14–17 in Tokyo. The conference record credits Youna Kang and labels the work an interactive VTuber experience. That places the project in a performance-technology forum rather than only in creator-economy coverage.

KPBS’s 2025 original reporting later documented Kang demonstrating the motion-capture suit that brings the avatar to life. Together, these sources support a basic production fact: CodeMiko’s virtual character is operated through live performance capture. They do not establish a fixed technical stack for every stream, nor do they turn a demonstration into a claim about commercial scale.

Editorial analysis

Analysis

Character Ledger analysis: CodeMiko makes the apparatus part of the appeal. Instead of presenting a character as frictionless synthetic output, the format leaves room for the performer, tooling and unpredictable interaction. That creates a different trust contract from photorealistic influencer work: liveness and responsiveness become editorial features. Character consistency does not require concealing production: viewers can recognize a human operator while accepting the avatar as the show’s host. The editorial value lies in how those layers are choreographed, including when a technical limitation becomes part of a live moment rather than a hidden defect.

Practical application

Practical lesson

Plan a virtual creator as a show-control system. Identify the operator, latency tolerance, moderation path, contingency mode and which interactions are safe to expose. Production transparency can add value, but only when it supports the audience experience rather than becoming a vague ‘tech behind the magic’ claim.

Evidence limits

Evidence limits

The ACM entry substantiates the 2021 presentation, while the later local-public-media report substantiates a motion-capture demonstration. Neither source is an audited viewership report or a complete technical specification. This article does not claim that a 2025 workflow existed in 2021.
