The persona

Gorillaz is an animated band whose four characters, 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs, front music actually written, performed and produced by Damon Albarn with visuals created by Jamie Hewlett. Together these are real, audited commercial and industry outcomes attached to an animated act, not claims made only by the band itself.

Character versus company

Virgin Records, and later Warner-distributed releases, signed and paid Albarn and his collaborators; the RIAA certifications and Grammy nominations belong to the recording, not to the fictional 2D or Murdoc as legal parties. The band's own site maintains the character layer deliberately, through Kong Studios' in-world lore and the "Gorillify Yourself" avatar tool built on Hewlett's art, while crediting the actual songwriting to Albarn in formal release metadata. That split, an animated front and named human authorship in the underlying business records, is the model this entry treats as established rather than assumed.
